Agaves are one of my favorite plants. I have many nice varieties of Agaves and feature Agaves in my cacti and succulent garden.
Like any other type of plant, there is great diversity - some get huge, some stay very small, but they all do put out quite a flower spike. Not sure what pollinates them, but would suspect bats in many cases. There are so many beautiful variegated varieties to enjoy as well. I am in Agave heaven in central TX

The variegated pup looks like Agave angustifolia variegata.

Ann, it depends on the specific Agave (species). The A. angustifolia is a bit tender. Mine was hit when grown in-situ in Houston but came back nicely. Agave americana and many species of Agaves native to the desert SW can take sub-freezing providing there is low humidity and it is dry. It tends to be the combination of cold and moisture that does the most damage to Agaves. Many Agaves are purely Zone 10+ tropicals, and some can survive Zone 6 in the dry west. - so bottom line is - there is no direct answer to your question.

    Mmmmmmh!

I think I should give it a try, but I will be sure to plant them where it is drier.

    Thanks!

The Mama has ripening pods. I harvested just a few from the thorny masses.
