    Epiphyllum - Orchid Cactus

I believe this one is E. Strictum. My mother gave it to me. She obtained it from Augusta Evans School which is a school for very special children. They have a plant sale every year.

It blooms at night, and the bloom melts by about 9am, so I snuck outside early to take this picture.

It looked so small when I posted it, so I figured I would do something to give you an idea of the size.

I have several varieties. Most were gifts and hybridized, but they haven't bloomed yet. More fertilizer and attention this year should help.

My wrist is in the foreground which makes it look a little smaller. This bloom is huge. I self pollinated it. I don't know if that will work.

Ann, I have an orchid cactus that only blooms occasionally and one that has never bloomed. It is in a clay pot and has not been transplanted since I have had it. Do you think I should put it in a bigger pot, how much do you feed them? Any other tips to get better blooms?
The one has a bloom now. It is red.

This one is in a hanging pot which is leaning badly due to the big stems on one side.

Last year, I decided to try Osmocote 14-14-14 and do a better job at watering. It is also definitely pot bound which they seem to like.

Anyway, I have had about 6 blooms on one of the stems and one on the other. Last year, it only bloomed a couple of times. I hope it blooms more this year.

I don't know what other colors I have. They haven't bloomed yet. Remember sewfarsewgood? They sent a lot of cuttings to me from plants that their father had hybridized. I can't wait to see those bloom!

There are two more blooms ready to open soon on the white one.

I am excited about another one that will open in the near days to come. The bud is a different color than the white one.

The two white ones bloomed last night. They were nothingness when I went outside to check on them today.

I'm still watcing the hybridized one. That one was a gift from sewfarsewgood, Arlene and Gary, remember them? It is a hybridized by one of their fathers. I'm not sure which, but I had a name on it. The name was lost...

I am anxious to see the first bloom! Gee, I hope I don't have to get up in the middle of the night to see it.... LAS!

    Anticipation....

I'm still trying to see a 'clue' as to what the color will be. One thing for sure, it is bound to be really doubled.

    It just keeps getting bigger!

I do believe it is about to open, and it definitely looks like it is going to be one HUGE white monster!

I'm glad I went outside to take the pictures. The bloom was closed when I went outside this morning.
