Thread: free arborvitae for me to dig?

    free arborvitae for me to dig?

    I have a chance to get 5 small shrubs I believe to b dwarf arborvitae..they are 3 years old and about 3 feet tall....can I successfully dig these and transplant them or are the roots too large? thanx

    At 3 feet tall, the root ball should be quite small. If you just cut down at the drip line with a shovel, you should get enough roots. I would wait until you see the deciduous trees start to break bud, though. The ground will be soft and the arbs will still be dormant. Also, make sure they get plenty of water their first year.

    correct me if i am wrong , but i have never heard of a dwarf arb!?\
    dwarf alberta spruce maybe .

    no time for a search this time of year.
    i have 100 monardo beebalm to divide tonite .

    still no time for search but

    after i signed off the other nite there was a guy at the cents show that specialized in what i call super dwarf plants dont know if the mentioned plant was one of them .
    mighty expensive plants
    some would never get more than 5 inches tall in 20 years.
    biggest purchasers of this type of shrubs would be garden railroaders.
    i am one but the atraction just wasnt there for me.
    mainly because they were expensive PPatented and i am a tightwad when it comes to my railroad. i will plant small and transplant first.
    oilwell thats me and my landscaping preferences.
    besides i like the jungle look , now you see the train and now you dont.
