Out of necessity I've had to cruise the tree and shrub sales due to an inconsiderate 'renter'(? that's a whole other story) neighbor who has cut trees that previously gave privacy and who has taken to parking his truck in my front bedroom(might as well be--it is under the street light at the corner of my lot and I can see it day and night--but he doesn't have to look at it). So, yesterday I bought an arborvitae(3 feet) and a Moonglow Juniper(3.5 feet). I realized immediately they were too short to block the truck. So now I am debating: between the two houses where they cut down 2 huge junipers(privacy) or in the backyard near the fence to block out seeing then either sit on their side deck and watch my backyard or their backdeck(where i get to see them from my top deck).
Today, I transplanted a Cleveland Select Pear to the front of the house in hopes of blocking the truck(partially). Hubby really did a number on digging it out and it will take a miracle for it to survive. We then bought 3 GORGEOUS Golden Vicary privets--huge ! They were 50% off: $8.98. I am very ashamed to say they were as big as ones we stupidly payed $40 apiece for from an upper end nursery(they were Monrovia Lodense hedges). The Golden Vicary is beautiful. It is between our two proiperties in the front of the house leading to the pickup truck. I want to go back and get another and plant it in front of the pickup.
All in all -- a busy day !
Sorry for any mispellings ; I'm in a hurry to make it to dinner. Hubby thinks it's funny not to call me ;)

Got very large Crimson Pygmy Barberry at Lowes today for $2. It had been $12.95 but it was on 'death's door'(the deep discount table). Its leaves were curled(dry!) but I scratched the uppermost stem growth and it was green, so I knew it still had its juices flowing. I have given it Superthrive and am sure it will live.
I actually went there just to verify that shrubs , in addition to trees, were now 50% off. I wanted another Golden Vicary Privet. So, yes, everything was 50% off but I started looking at Barberry. I wanted the one that grows tall. Then I got diverted to the discount table and was so excited at the prospects of getting this big shrub for $2 that I didn't read the label. Anyway. I only had $2 and we don't use a credit card unless it's a compelling situation. I figured that I could consult with hubby re additional plant choices.
Anyway, when I got to the car, I looked at the tag !
Pygmy ! Oh well ! I have no idea where it will go but it is a nice shrub and hopefully it will rally !

Kathy,
I also got in on the 'fall sales' here. At lowes too! I got 2 crimson pygmy and 2 rosy glow. For 1.00 ea. 2 gal. pots.
Daylilies for 1.00 per #1. Lullaby baby, little wine cup, and prarie blue eyes and Nanho blue butterfly bush for 1.00!
Then on the way to pick up my son from work. Stopped at this upscale nursery and they had 50% off. Their prices are the same as everywhere so for 3.00 picked up a few more, hot lips cleome, fireworks solidago, bushy aster, jean davis lavender (1.00 at lowes), knautia macedonia, and a mizuraki (sp?) toad lily.
Then stopped the next day, and bought a sambucus black lace and a flowercarpet rose appleblossom they were reg. 29.99 but got them for 10.00 ea. in 3 gal. pots!
I'm going to stop back there today and see if they have a white flowercarpet rose.
Don't ya just love the deals!!!!! I know I do!

Vicki- You done good girl ! Really good !
I got to Lowes today and it was....Christmas !
About all I could find, and lord knows why I fell for them, were Majestic pansies. Pansies that ALLEDGEDLY will bloom fall THROUGH winter ! They have 4 inch flowers(hence the name).
We'll see about that continuous bloom ! LOL! :D

They were 4 to a cup to make them look big--each cup was .50 and I got 4--so I'm either planting 16 or 4 plants--bet how cold it is will influence that decision !
