One nice thing about living in Austin is that we get just enough winter to be able to grow certain deciduous shrubs that are more common in colder hardiness zones, but I couldn't grow in Houston due to winters being too warm. One of those is Weigela. On April 1st, I was surprised to see my variegated Weigela loaded with beautiful blooms which contrasted with the variegated foliage is quite a nice spring surprise. Since our summers here get so hot, I do have it planted in a spot where it doesn't bear the brunt of the hot summer sun.
