I have potted clematis in the open corral(winter protection) on the south side of the house. They are growing by leaps and bounds. No way am I going to do any pruning as I have read about..or should I ?
And, the most important question...where do you all have yours planted ? Compass direction/amount of sun; natural soil moisture level, under or not under tree canopy ,etc.?????

I have done more redaing about pruning. How can I ignore this:
PRUNING
The first year: All newly planted clematis should be pruned down to at least twelve inches the first April-May after planting. This is very important, and you will be rewarded with a more bushy, compact plant, full of flowers. If no pruning is done, the plant will still grow and flower, but you will not enjoy the same display you would if pruning was done properly.
Waaa ! I know that two are The President and I'll have to check out the other.
Tha other is Miss Bateman and it says to prune after flowering. But it also says it has a second flush of flowers in August/September. Maybe I shouldn't prune either one. Also, they are still inpots and this isn't technically the first spring season after planting.

Cathy,
I put mine on the north side of the house so they would get as much chill time as possible. They are in the filtered shade of my remaining older pecan tree which is just starting to produce leaf buds so they get a lot more sun in the winter and early spring than they get the rest of the year.
I'm amazed that mine are doing this well because they haven't had very much attention (no pruning).
