This is a small flower, but there are 6 to a scape and two scapes in bloom at once.

It definitely deserves the name...

And here it is beside Limona...

Cindee,

After years of collecting and growing, and this year's new treats, my patio is getting prettier by the day.

And just think, my older bulbs are just now starting to put up scapes.

This one is very similar to Pamela which also simply drops pollen all over the place. It remains to be seen whether this one will multiply like Pamela does.

I have to tell you that 12 petite blooms all at once on one plant are a sight to behold.

Ohhh I am so jealous, Ann, that you have such a profusion of bloomers! Alas, except for my unknown, I have no more promises of flowers this year. I will have a happy mess of seeds to play with now, but it's the flowers i truly want. I posted a request for other bulb recommendations for SW FL zone ten container gardening, so i can keep some sense of gardening going while I wait for surgery (now next fall UGH!). Hopefully someone will come up with a plan to keep me busy while I can not get around yard. Please keep your photos coming, so I can live vicariously through your eyes.

Cindee,

I was at Home Depot today, to pick up some vermiculite and perlite (4 cubic foot bags). The spring bulbs are in there, also. In those are 'Red Lion', 'Apple Blossom' and 'Minerva'. Those seem to be the standards here, and I have learned that they do fairly well in our gardens.

The bulbs are not at a high price. They are $4.99, I think. In my experience, some of these will bloom, and some of them will not this year. If not, they will bloom next year.

Certainly, all of them do multiply!

Thanks for the reply Ann. Our Home Depot stopped selling any amaryllis bulbs about amonth ago. The bulbs I do find are silly for Florida. Doaffodils, Narcissus and such that will rot here very easily with our humid temps. Maybe I will try some other glads and lillys, though I am not sure what will do good in containers. It will be and ADVENTURE! lol ;)

Glads will do great in the ground! They do here!

Lilies do much better here if grown in pots and that is primarily due to excessive rainfal in my area.

If you do try Lilies, I will tell you that the orientals do much better here. I have some Lollipops that come back year after year in nice pots, but I don't know if they require chill hours. We do get some, and lately, we have gotten too much!

If you want some 'the standards', please let me know. I have many and can get more.

Cindee,

I have some other ideas, but Hunter is in need of help with some homework he is working on....

I'll get back with you about the many bulbs that do great with no chill factors!

Thanks Ann, any input will be welcome. I addressed my request over on the GW Bulb Forum, and have had no replies. So, when ever you get a moment. I have had some luck with Freesias and I love my peruvian daffodil. I just do not know where they are planted in my bulb bed and might as well start fresh. So at that, I have some where to start my planning. I just need to order soon as it is almost March and I need to get them planted.

Ann -

forgive me -
I believe that your amaryllis, which has such a gracile nice shape and such a brilliant red color is not Royal Velvet...
The flowers of Royal Velvet have far broader segments. A special feature of them is these almost black veins on the ruby red subfont color. And they are NOT "elegant" like these flowers you have displayed.
I am sorry - there seems to a lot of mislabelling this year

LAS! Hans!

Thank you so much! I wondered about that! They do seem to remind me more of Pamela, but I thought I would wait to see if they multiplied as such.

Yep! You have told me what I suspected and was waiting to hear.

That's okay! Two scapes, twelve blooms and so very pretty and adorable, even if they are small!

I will put that big ole question mark on them! I don't remember who I bought them from, but I will be sure to look it up and let them know....

Thanks! You are a jewel!

There are many red knight star lily cultivars generating ummh... sweet gracile blooms available.

A rather strong indication for "Pamela" is unproportionally big bulbs and broad leaves as compared to these tiny flowers.
Very big bulbs are apt to produce three scapes in close succession.

What reminds me most of Pamela is the dripping pollen...

Somehow, I doubt that these are Pamela. These are a darker, more intense red. Pretty, and so many blooms! So, I'll take them, whatever they are and not complain for I am enjoying this season of blooms.

Ann...my "unknown" really resembles yours and like yours is red not the orange red Pamela suggests.

Hans-this ones leaves are broad and long. Very pretty with the more petite flower. It's some form of Minature, I am guessing.

I'll fix...

Back in a minute!

Ann B.

There you go...

Yours does look an awful lot like mine.

Did you measure the blooms?

CindeeA
02-23-2007, 02:49 PM
Thanks for the 'fix' Ann. What am I doing wrong?

I measured this evening and the blooms are about 5". I took some more pics with a tape measure but need to know the proper way (Again!) how to insert my photos from PhotoBucket. Thanks, sweetie.

You are using the href form of the url. Instead, use the [url] form and that should work...

CindeeA
02-23-2007, 05:25 PM
OK how's this?
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/CindeeA/DSCF1271.jpg

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/CindeeA/DSCF1272.jpg

The blooms are about 5" horizontal and about 4.5" across.

Whoops! My fault, I should have said the [img] form. I'll try that!

I don't use photobucket, so I am not sure what you see...

Ann B.
02-23-2007, 05:29 PM
Yep, replacing [url] with [img] works!

We are getting there, aren't we?

Cindee,

With so much confusion on the wholesale labeling of these bulbs, it is impossible to correctly identify some of these. Especially with the reds, there are just too many similarities.

I don't always have to have a trademarked name. I know what features I like and some of those features are LOTS of blooms, multiple scapes and I adore the ones that multiply into clumps. Hardiness for me is an issue with some because I want to grow them in clumps outside and not worry about bringing them in or repotting them (just dividing occasionally).

IF these flowers of your amaryllis -
Cindee,
- DO have a hint of PINK -
(particularly visible when the buds are just emerging from the covering spathe leaves) - then this might be the cultivar "Donau".

This hybrid produces remarcably broad leaves, particularly if grown under good light conditions.

My NOT Royal Velvet has lots of slender (not wide) leaves...

WoW! I am enjoying this!

ThIS red one is definitely a beauty, too,
AND:
Neither Pamela (the flower shape is far too noble)
Nor Donau (the color is far tooooo intensely-red)

Very well-proportioned!

Ann B.
02-25-2007, 03:46 PM
Yep!

T'is a beauty, and SO very much fun to see 12 simultaneous blooms on one bulb especially such pretty blooms!

CindeeA

Hans-here are the earlier buds, definately a rose, deep pink coloration.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/CindeeA/DSCF1250.jpg
When opened fully, I do not think mine is as intense a red as Ann's, but definitely more Red-red than an orange-red.

Ann that photo of all those blooms is wonderful! OH YIPPEE, I got the photo to work this time, girl!
