View Full Version : Wrong Season
This, shrub/fruit is blooming NOW, but the fruit has already been harvested.
This pomegranate flower is supposed to appear in the spring on next years new growth. I'm just wondering what this will mean to next years fruit crop. Anybody grow these things that can offer some help.

Hi Tom, I grow the dwarf Pomegranites in Austin TX and they tend to bloom as long as the temperatures are warm enough to encourage the bloom, and mine continue to bear fruit almost year round. They bloom and bear fruit simultaneously for me unless we get a below freezing temp. which will put the plant into winter dormancy. The fact it is blooming now for you shouldn't affect the production of fruit next spring. My plant tends to show off it's beautiful flowers every chance it gets.

The flowers are beautiful. Are the fruit tasty? I wish they were hardy here. I don't have any more room left for house plants.

Not sure where in AL you are, but Pomegranites are hardy thru Zone 8, this I am sure of. They will go deciduous on you in colder climates, e.g. Z8a and semi evergreen in Z8b, and remain evergreen in Zone 9. Floridata says this.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 8 - 11. Dormant pomegranates can tolerate winter temperatures down to 15 F (-9.4 C), but they can be severely damaged by a late frost that comes after new growth has begun in spring.
Hope this info helps. We are borderline between Z8b and 9a where we are in Austin.
