15 Day Weather Graph

Wow!

Maybe, just maybe, it's because I teach math, but I love this.

http://www.accuweather.com now displays a 15 day forecast on a graph. It includes the highs and the lows as well as real feel.

Now that I have an LCD projector in my classroom, I plan to use this when I am teaching graphing to my students.

All you have to do is enter the city, state and then click on 1-5 days. Scroll toward the lower third, and you will get a quick view of what your next 15 days are forecasted to be like.

I keep trying to tell my students that a graph tells you more than pages and pages of numbers.

I have a neat application/story about people who sold a house. After selling the house, it rained and the basement leaked. The buyers claimed that the sellers withheld information and that they knew the basement leaked. Using charts, the sellers proved that the rainfall was never as high as it was after the buyers moved in and therefore would not have 'known' that the basement leaks. It's a statistical process control related story but they use an individulas chart so that's just like the weather chart--each data point is a value(as opposed to an average,etc.). I'll have to find the link to the story/application.

I am definitely going to save that one.

My students cannot easily identify with basements because there are very few around here. What they can identify with are the 10,000s of houses that were flooded for the first time ever during Katrina.

I'll definitely remember this post and your link when I start teaching graphing in about a month or so.
