Got clobbered today .. while we were at church .. straight line winds hit us ... took "all" of my rose cuttings that were outside in pots and dumped them .. limbs broken .. roots pulled out of pots ... leaves stripped .. not a pretty site. These were my babies .. survived "ME" and the winter. Not sure which will live and which won't but will keep all and see if they put out again.

Ah .. the joys of the unexpected .... oh well .. kept good records .. know where I can get more cuttings ... (if needed) and won't lose as many due to my mistakes this time.

Hopefully ... none of u had the same results ..... and not really complaining .. they were the only things hurt .. straight line winds can cause a lot of serious damage ... nothing like that .. a few trees down in town and that was it. Beats the other possibilities.

Jim-What a pain, my sympathies.

This winter has just ground away at my cuttings outside, can't wait for the growing season to start to begin to make up for it.

Around here, the big problem has been the constant freeze-thaw thing, another week of it ahead according to our weather forecast. Each morning my "babies" are pushed up a bit out of the soil, and eventually have to get firmed back down.

The main thing on my mind is-how will we improve things for next winter? Some kind of easy windbreak for you? Some kind of mulch for me?

I heard of one operation, Jim, that grew double rows of cheap (feedtype) corn every so many rows in their nursery, and left the stalks up all winter. Guess they found it cheaper than building snow fence or planting hedging windbreaks. I might consider the corn option if I start growing in an exposed field, compared to close to my house at the moment. The wind can definitely do as much damage as the other elements at times.

I guess winter's like a box of chocolates, Forrest, er Jim--Glen in BC
