These were grown from seeds from Kathy Patterson. I remember when the package of seeds came in the mail and all these critters started crawling out. I remember the neatly shaped, burrowed holes in many of the seeds.
Well, the seedlings have grown for two years now. I had a problem with a big grasshopper who feasted on a couple of the buds, but I am looking forward to more blooms this year.
They are still in one gallon pots. Only one rooted into the ground. I pulled them all out of their pots this afternoon and checked the roots. They all look healthy. I will not repot them this year. They will go in the garden.
While I had them out of the pots, I brushed all the leaves, pecan shells and weed seeds from the top of the soil. I also pulled any grass or weed seedling. This is so much easier to do with the plant out of the pot.
I can't wait to get these jewels in the ground. If they can survive with as few chill hours as we have had this past winter, they will do well for me, and I can harvest many, many more seeds to share.
Love this plant and the fact that they are hardy and survive in my southern climate!
