Was down collecting the weekly free plastic pots from my local nursery and I mentioned that they hadn't had as many as usual over the past weeks. It was suggested I go next door to the two landscape companies and ask them. Well I came away with over 2000 free plastic nursery gallon pots, too many 2 and 3 gallon pots to count and access to many many 5 gallon and larger pots for 20 cents each and up to a 50 gallon pot costing me a dollar.
PLUSSSSSSSS - a list of the most desireable landscape plants to grow (what they currently are using in large numbers) and a commitment to buy as many plants from me as I can produce. Seems that for the same money they would rather drive 9 miles to Center Point, than 65 miles to San Antonio. I can understand that rationale.
BTW - chinese Fringe flower or Loropetalum is one of the plants they are using in large numbers and that are harder for them to get. A large variety of grasses (Liriope, aztec grass, zebra grass, Pampas Grass, Graaacimillus, Graciella) are very popular too and EASY to grow. Minimal interest in arbovitae, and junipers except for the very low growing blue varieties - Blue Rug Juniper comes to mind here as does Bar Harbor Juniper. I am also told I can sell ALL the Texas Mountain Laurel I can find.

End of Feburary and we haven't had winter yet. or maybe I missed it napping. Weather in the 50's, my grandson wants to wear shorts to school. Buds on peach tree swollen like it's ready to bloom. Bought new snow plough and only used it once. It was supposed to pay for itself. Ha! what's going on.:D

Jim,
You know, I do believe that winter did really pass us by. We had a few colder than normal days, but they came later than usual. Our first frost was about Christmas when it is usually around Thanksgiving.
Today, I was taking one of my frequent little walks to clear my tired old brain, and wouldn't you know it? The confederate rose which is normally herbaceous (dies to the ground) has new leaves emerging from last year's 12-15 foot branches. It has never done that before...
Maybe, I shouldn't have pruned back some of those other, normally herbaceous shrubs. Whoops! Live and learn. Hopefully, we won't have a late March hard freeze and spoil it all.
I for one am keeping my fingers crossed, but will still wait to plant those more tender perennials and vines outside.
Enjoy!
I to have a nursery that sells me gallon pots for 5 cents there all used each container is sold 5 cents per gallon so a 10 gallon would cost me 50 cents great saving to me and to the costumer I can sell a little cheaper than most

These pots were just stacked in the landscapers storage yard. Look up the address for the medium sized business' (those that don't work out of the home) and give them a visit. I'll bet an Ice cream at the little creamery in Brenham that you will find a stack or two or a whole pile that you can get cheap or for free. The Dallas area has to have oodles of landscape companies. You might try the smaller towns to. Kerrville area has about 40,000 prople. New pots are cheap enough for the big guys that they don't want to go through the trouble to clean the used pots. To me bleach is cheap, and I have the time.

Before we bet ... do they have Rocky Road?? It is important to take care of the "details" before transacting serious business??

Blue Bell Ice Cream - the best in Texas is made in Brenham Texas. I am sure they have rocky road - infact I may preview some tommorow to be sure it is good.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but isn't Brenham where Blue Bell was founded?

What a great place and what a great legacy. Blue Bell Ice cream is as good as it gets. As for founded - I guess so since the packages all indicate Blue Bell Ice Cream from the little creamery in Brenham. I love it all - oink oink
