Since I first started planting lily bulbs; I have laughed in the face of winter. I’ve planted them on Christmas day and then later than that in pots against the south wall. Most of you know of my moving saga (not emotionally moving-LOL!, well-it might be for me!, but rather moving from one house to another). Tomorrow it is supposed to be in the upper 50’s , maybe 60’s and I am going to try very hard to remove the remaining perennials, shrubs and bulbs. Oh, I am leaving some perennials behind.
Currently, I feel like the Lily Queen. Not only do I have tons of bulbs to dig up, I greedily bought more bulbs on the internet and the seller was very generous! Of course, they remain unplanted. So, first things first, I’ll be out there digging away this weekend. But hopefully, this odd weather will stick around so I can get them all in the ground very soon.

But for those of you with lily bulbs –you can plant and dig and move them in winter as long as the ground is not frozen !

I just came inside from taking a tour around the gardens. Of course, even my liliums are dormant. I have found that orientals do okay here (not as well as up north, I am sure), but Asiatics don't do as well unless they are in a pot. I think that is because of all the heavy rains that we get.

More and more paperwhites are blooming, but I sure do need to divide them. The clumps are huge and tight.

I see one clump of daffodils that is huge and very tight also. The way that I tell the difference is that the paperwhite leaves are longer and sort of flop over whereas the daffodil leaves are tall, but not as tall. They don't start to flop over until they are ready to go dormant.

I have some crocus in pots, but I have no idea whether they survived. I haven't dug around in them to check.

We have a 3 day weekend. It's nice to have a short break during the first part of the semester to catch my breath. I have some papers to grade and lots of things to do inside. We are expecting a cold front. They are saying a low in the mid 30's in the morning and lower 30's on Sunday morning. High of 68 on Monday, then dropping back down again.

I have already turned on the heater so that the patio won't cool off too much.

I wished I could have found some bulbs around here, the weather has been unbelieveable. Highs in the 50's and lows in the 30's. I installed a new border bed in my open backyard. I need to set the borders in this area as it's just an open field. I have mainly been concentrating on the front and east side yard. But this will be the 3rd major planting area for the 'backyard'. It will block the view of the back driveway, clothsline, compost pile, etc.
Keep having fun and hope the weather holds for you. We got snow again finally 2 days ago. 10" or so. There's only a couple inches left though as it has been sunshiny and in the high 30's.
