hi folks
i did some hedera helix ivy cuttings on jan 2nd.
they rooted in twenty days on bottom heat.
its the 16h of FEB now and they are just getting a flush of new growth.
my question is do you think they will fill out a 10 inch hanging basket by mothers day?and look saleable.
this is my first time using ivy for hanging baskets.
would you buy one if they looked good?
or am i just wasting my time.

My wife loves it and wants to do some of her own.
Shepp,I've seen them in pots with a heart shape wire in them to grow around looks really neat,Put a couple of artificial flowers in the pot also to add color. Can;'t say about the size tho
Gene
shepp also plant some in a pot and put a bird house on a stick and let the ivy crawl up make sure to add the bird on top of the bird house

Shepp,
Around here, hanging baskets with a mixture of plants with similar requirements has been the rage for the last several years.
For example, place three of your new ivy plants at an equal distance apart around the outer edge of the basket. Then place rooted cuttings of another plant in between each one, begonia for example, then something different in the middle.
Or mix the different kinds of ivy, like variegated and solid and add some asparagus fern or allysum or ageratum.
The advantage of hedera helix ivy is that it comes in many shades and types and looks good when combined with each other or different plants.
Our retail stores are already stocking the 6 packs of begonia, etc. for $1.30 a 6 pack. So, you could use those if you don't already have cuttings started.
You still have time to make your own, because you don't want big plants to mix with the ivy, just small ones.
Variegated, chartruese and small flowered plants would all look good with the ivy. Just make sure that they all have the same sun and water requirements.
And like Gene pointed out, an ornament of some kind would add to the attraction of the basket, and the price.
Does that help?

Here is a link to a picture of my mixed ivy hanging basket with an Alocasia plant in the center. This basket recently underwent pruning in order to obtain a fuller look. I will be pruning it once again in the spring, but this time I won't plant the cuttings in the basket as it is finally getting full, and I am ready to start letting it get long, like the string of pearls which is now almost 4 foot long.

Ann,
Can you send me a picture of that Rex Begonia? Do you know what the name is?
Begonia
Also I have an Alocasia, but didn't know that was the name of it. It is multipling I think. Thank you.

Begonia,
I do not know the name of this one, but I took some pictures for you. The lighting is not good as it is very overcast here.
Thanks for asking me to photograph it! If you hadn't, I wouldn't have noticed that there are numerous flower buds under the leaves.

Send me mail if you know the name.
