This shrub is in a friends yard and I have been having a hard time finding out what it is. The picture I took of a part of the shrub is a bit wilted but you can still see the leaves and flowers. She was once told that it was Jasmine but we live in Michigan - zone 5/6 plus the flowers don't really look the same. It is very fragrant and is still in bloom. She has one plant that she let grow wild and it's about 6 feet tall and about 4-5 feet wide.
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks,

Sue A.

Sorry about not being detailed about the picture I took. What your seeing in the picture is a branch or two that were cut off the main shrub that morning so it was wilting quite a bit by time that picture was taken. It really is a shrub. She has several in her yard.

I figured it out ! The shrub is called Ribes Odoratum. I found a picture of it in the Taylor's Guide to Shrubs and from there I looked it up.

Thanks for the suggestions,

Sue

Sue--thanks for solving that mystery! I spent quite a while looking thru different honeysuckle relatives based on the flower shape and fragrance, but nothing had a leaf similar to that shrub.

The leaves sure look like ribes, but those flowers are totally different, plus the fragrance. What an amazing variety of plants on this planet :)

Hi Glen!
How is your nursery going? I haven't seen you post on the Backyard Growers Board in a while. Hope everything is going well.

I don't think I'm familiar with that board, must be more than one of us!

My little nursery here is doing well. I found several plants that grow quite well for me and sell well.

Next job is to learn to control the weather, right?

So are you a backyard grower?

Cheers, Glen

Sorry Glen, for some reason I thought you were also on the other board. Glad to hear that your nursery is going well. What plants work for you in your area? Just wondering.
Yes, I am a backyard grower. I have a small nursery at my home. I hoe to get it completely up and running this year.

Hi again Sue--I think we've said over and over that you have to discover your niche in this backyard deal. You can't do what the huge growers do, so have to find a few things that are worth the time and expenses, and leave you with some cash at the end of the year.

Here I've found the clematis armandii and phormiums always sell well for good $. Lewisia sells well, tho not a big money maker. I mostly love the variety of colours, so keep growing them and make a bit along the way.

Hellebore plugs (6cm) sold real well for me last summer. The mature plants have been tough to market, since they are sold so early in the retail year, during their flowering time. I'll continue trying these, as the money can be quite good and they are rather popular right now.

Tinkering with several other plants, we'll see what works and doesn't.
