I mentioned once before that I have always wanted a pink Duetzia.

Two years ago, I took a cutting of my Mom's Deutzia, and now, I am glad that I did. She sold the property, and now the Deutzia will be destroyed as the land becomes part of industry in the area.

To my knowledge, it didn't bloom last year, but it is putting on a show this year. I have it located in filtered shade, and it probably would have bloomed quicker if planted in full sun.

I noticed that some of the flowers have a pink streak on the outer edge, and I wonder if that is how they came up with the pink variety that I have heard about....

Anyway, here is a picture of one of the clusters of blooms on this pretty shrub.

Ann,

Is Duetza the botanical name for "Flowering Almond", cause it sure looks the same (except for the color.)

Flowering Almond is very similar in appearance. I took a cutting of my neighbor's, and it rooted very easily.

They look somewhat alike, but they are different....

Rebecca, I think we think alike!

Rebecca,

Flowering Almond is Prunus glandulosa, and the flowers are more rounded. I have a rooted cutting of my neighbor's that needs to be planted in the ground this fall IF it survived Hurricane Ivan. It is somewhere amongst the jungle of plants that need to find a new home in my yard. They root very easily.

Slowly, but surely, I am figuring out which plants look like they will make it. The larger Deutzia had rooted through the pot and into the ground didn't make it. I had asked that the tree removal men let the tree fall on it, leaving the roots intact, but I turned around to see that it had been ripped from the ground. There was no time to make rooted cuttings before it died completely.

Today, I found the second plant that I started. It has new leaves, and I am almost certain that it is the smaller Deutzia. I sure hope so because I never see these on the market.

They are supposed to be hardy to zone 4. One day, I hope to find the double pink variety. I saw a picture of one once, and it was absolutely gorgeous.

I'm going to plant this one of my gardens this weekend. The leaves are larger on a Deutzia and the are somewhat serrated and sort of fuzzy (lacking gloss).

Many of the plants lost all of their leaves in the heavy winds, so it is harder for me to identify them unless there is a label still in there somewhere.

It has been cool today and hopefully that will last through the weekend. I would love to spend some time trying to straighten out what is left.

This morning, while visiting my mothers house, she showed me a plant that I had given her when she bought this home. She had told me that it did 'nothing' where she originally planted it, but now it is blooming like crazy. For the life of me, I could not remember which plant she was talking about.

Anyway, as it turns out, it is a Pink Spirea, and right next to it was a shrub in bloom that I recognized immediately. She said that she brought it from the 'old' house (where I grew up).

It is a flowering almond. I lost the little cuttings that I started just before Hurricane Ivan, so I cut one small branch tip to bring home to root. This is even better because I can say that it came from the one at the house where I grew up.

For an update on the Deutzia... It is huge now and absolutely loaded with flower buds. The stems drape gracefully away from the neighbors fence.

I'll have to take a picture when the sun is more in the west (this afternoon). It is so pretty and it is going to be absolutely beautiful when it blooms this year!

Well, I couldn't get a good picture of the Deutzia. The sun was simply too bright.

But, here is a picture of a bloom on Mama's Flowering Almond...

This shrub is so large, it is difficult to capture the true grace of the arching limbs.

It has been misting rain, but I managed to get a few pictures.

It's going to be loaded with blooms in the coming week. Hopefully, I will manage to take some pictures when it is at its peak bloom.

I have to tell you that I am proud of this one because the original plant was my grandmothers.

"Mama's" Deutzia is not quite in full bloom, but almost...

Bumble bees love the blossoms.

Hopefully, this picture will begin to depict the gracefulness of the arching limbs as they dangle down to the ground, laden with luscous blooms.

I am so glad to have them plant, even it it did struggle through the hurricane. It originally came from my grandmother's gardens.

You cannot tell by the picture, but it is much taller than me, and I am not short, by any means (5' 7.5").

Vicki,

It delights me to see it looking so gorgeous. Even though it is located in the corner of my back yard, it is the first thing I notice when I leave in the morning and drive into the driveway in the afternoon.

I came so very close to losing this one. And since it was one of the ones my Mom left behind (poor bro was digging and transplanting like crazy), I am thrilled!
