Hi,
Have access to Seco Palms. Is there any other way to grow these things than from seeds?
From my understanding only the female seco's will produce seed. I don't see any seeds on these palms, and would just love to get cuttings from them before the city tears them out of this old House lot, now rezoned for Commerical area.
Please help! I would hate to see a Good Palm go to waste!

Kathy,
I do believe you are referring to the Sago Palm.
Seeds grow slowly, but can be done. Pups form on larger, more mature Sago's and can be as large as a grapefruit. You remove them from the parent plant, let them dry out for a day or two, then plant them on top of the soil in a pot, and keep them warm over the winter with good, but indirect light. Let them dry out slightly between watering. Ie., don't over water them.
Suckers will also form at the base of the parent plant. These suckers can be dug up, then transplanted, but be sure to keep them warm this winter, and you can let them dry out between watering.
Good Luck!

Yes that is the name.
Thank You, I was incorrect.
Okay, Don't know if these two available have pups or suckers didn't really get close enough to tell.
I will have to check them and see. Sure hope so cause it would be great to get some since they sell for so much!
thank you

Ann,
I saw the reply to the question on Seco palms. I didn't think they were talking about sagos so I skipped it. Anyway, maybe the drying out part is what I should be doing. I just figured the things need to be kept moist. I'll try that when I take the ones I have access to.
Thanks again,

Kathy and all,
Just a quick suggestion-if you see a large sago, check the base for pups. I received some a few years ago and had fair success in getting them to grow. Now, if I see a large sago with pups, I don't hesitate to ask the owner if I can "clean it up" for them. In the past 2 years I've been given over 100 pups. After a year, you can get $5-7 apiece. I was just given permission to take about 250 from a few plantation homes in my area. Try it out. Plus they make great gifts.
Have fun

Hi Ray,
Sago, a word I need to learn how to spell! I keep messing it up!
just like Weiglea (sp?)
Thank You for the advice! I will start looking for the pups. The two that I have in mind I don't know if they have any pups or not. But I'm gonna go back and check see if they do. Of course I won't have to ask anybody about these. Cause the nieghboorhood is being bought and torn down by the city. (Turning it into commercial area.)
That's great for me (the plant hunter) cause now I get "freeplants"
I'm as happy as a babys bottom in poke berry pie!
What a great find you've gotten on all of your Sago's too!
Thank You for the tips!
I'll now start looking for them!

Kathy,
You might want to take along a small pruning saw or something like that, just in case you run across some really big pups that do not want to break lose.
Good Luck and Have FUN!

Ann B.,
The "Another Thought" was a good one! Thank You!
Didn't find any pups yet, but now I'm in the looking! I'll let you know when I do!
Sagos are everywhere here. But they really didn't become popular 'round here til last year so maybe they ahven't had enough time to get big enough for the 'Pups' to Pup up! Ha Ha
Later,
