A couple of months ago, I found a huge cucumber hidden under the leaves of the vines. It was too big to eat (hard seeds), so I threw it on top of the compost pile. Then, I found a sugar baby mellon that had cracked opened. I threw that on the compost pile which consists primarily of wood chips.

After a couple of weeks, I noticed large leaf vines growing in the pile, and I just left it alone. After another couple of weeks, cucumbers started growing, then a tiny mellon started growing. We have since havested quite a few cucumbers, but we are still waiting for the mellon to ripen.

After an early frost Sunday morning, I looked out the window, and the green leaves had melted. And I thought, so much for the cucumbers.

This morning, as I made my rounds I went over to look at the vines, and sure enough, there are new blooms. The watermellon is still growing, and I collected 12 long, burpless cucumbers.

Well, now, tell me what would you call this? Lasagna gardening or a raised bed? Either way, I think I may consider a raised/lasagna tomatoe patch next year.

Still Having FUN!

Sounds like a little of both to me. I love finding things in the compost pile.
I have a louquat tree that seems to love sprouting seeds in the compost pile. I have put them in gallon containers and have about ten now. Not sure what to do with them at this time of year.

I guess i"ll keep them in my BOB's special greenhouse over the winter. Maybe someone will want them in the spring. The fruit is wonderful. Fuzzy like a peach and sweet as sugar. They look like a louquat with fuzz!
