As promised, I am reporting on what we learned today at Master Gardener Training. Our class was held at the Botanical Gardens. We studied the nomenclature of plants, ie. the Latin names and the reason for using the Latin names. Specifically, plants are categorized by Family and within a family, there are one or more Genuses and within a Genus one or more Species.
Then we toured the Gardens which were spectacular, and then another session on shady gardens. It is emphasized that many sun loving plants in the north need to be grown in part shade in our region due to the summer heat, so we can't totally depend on labels which are not necessarily intended for our area due to extremes in temperatures.
Then, we had a great session on herbs and the use of organically grown herbs, followed by a visit to the herbal gardens.
All in all, a very delightful learning experience.
